Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, acknowledged that the government mishandled the student movement in Bangladesh, particularly during the quota reform protests. In an interview with the Indian Express, he admitted that the government should have engaged with the protesters from the beginning and taken a stance against the quota system earlier. Joy criticized the government's decision to leave the issue to the Supreme Court, stating that they should have acted sooner. Joy also claimed that foreign intelligence agencies were involved in escalating the violence during the protests, alleging that these agencies supplied firearms to protesters, which is highly unusual in Bangladesh due to the government's previous success in controlling militancy. He recounted the events leading up to Sheikh Hasina's departure from Bangladesh, noting that she was reluctant to leave but was convinced by special security forces due to the rapidly deteriorating situation. Since fleeing Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India, with no intention of seeking asylum elsewhere, contrary to some rumors. Joy expressed gratitude to the Indian government for ensuring her safety and emphasized the need for India to take a leadership role in maintaining Bangladesh's constitutional order and supporting the Awami League's efforts to reorganize for future elections.
