Railway Dilemma: Closing Trains Saves Money, but Still Costs 40 Crore Daily
In an ironic twist, the Bangladesh Railways has found itself in a financial paradox. For the fiscal year 2022-23, the railway sector recorded a staggering loss of 1,524 crore taka. However, the daily suspension of passenger trains is costing 40 crore taka—a hefty amount that raises the question: would running the trains actually save money? Railway Minister Zillul Hakim suggests that the suspension will continue until safety is guaranteed. Meanwhile, it appears that keeping the trains closed might just be the most expensive way to avoid further losses.
