Connecting Old Dhaka: MRT-2 Route Extends from Gulistan to Sadarghat

The Planning Commission is considering prioritizing the construction of MRT Line-2, which will link Gabtoli to Narayanganj with a branch through Old Dhaka to Sadarghat, over MRT Line-5 Southern Route. The shift is due to MRT-2’s potential to serve a larger urban population and have a greater economic impact.
MRT Line-5, which would connect Gabtoli to Dasherkandi, faces challenges due to a lack of commercial activity along its route. Various proposals are being reviewed, including scrapping Line-5 or building only parts of it.
The final decision on both projects will be made after government review. MRT Line-2 is estimated to cost Tk60,837 crore, while MRT Line-5 is expected to cost Tk54,618 crore.
